Welcome! My name is Lynda. I live in Texas and have two young boys, ages 7 and 5.
Spring of 2015 marks the end of their second year in the public school system. Things are going pretty great for my seven year old; he is challenged by the materials presented and has fun in his classes. My five year old, on the other hand, had a really rough year.
It turns out my youngest child needs way more one-on-one interaction and custom materials to match his interests and skill level. Although he's among the younger students in his class, he is way bored and highly energized. He can't sit still for several hours a day, and can't pay attention to lessons he's already mastered. He's labeled as an unruly troublemaker, and has been in suspension (both in-school and at-home) and to the principal's office many times.
It's effecting his self-esteem, and damaging a young child's vision of their own character and capabilities is a horrific thing.
Therefore, I've decided to start homeschooling him while allowing my older child to continue going to public school for at least another year while I get my bearings. Fortunately, I live in the state of Texas where homeschooling laws are super lax, so I get to make up my own curriculum, which will hopefully meet his individual educational needs.
I've found a TON of free online resources. There are detailed age-appropriate lesson plans, educational videos, handouts and worksheets, and online games for just about every conceivable topic!
My plan is to use this blog to document some of the cool stuff I find, along with detailing the customized lesson plans I put together and resources I'm using in case they're of value to anyone else out there. If you find anything I post useful, I'd love to know!
